Fence Cleaning & Preparation
The preparation stage is what separates a quick cover-up from a considered maintenance job. Exterior timber should be clean enough, dry enough and sound enough for the intended finish.
Dirt, algae and surface growth
Green growth and grime are common on shaded fencing. They should be removed rather than sealed beneath a new decorative coating.
Loose and flaking coatings
Old material that is no longer bonded can undermine the new finish. Local scraping or brushing may be needed, depending on the surface.
Drying time
Freshly washed or rain-soaked timber should be allowed to dry suitably before coating. Exact drying time depends on weather, shade, timber thickness and the product being used.
Repairs before decoration
Split boards, loose fixings, damaged caps and rotten sections should be identified first. Small repairs can sometimes be combined with the job; major structural problems should be resolved before painting.
